This is my portrait of Alfredo Arreguín. In honor of his forty-year legacy of artwork in the Pacific Northwest, Mexico, and around the world, this work offers a dreamscape with the master artist as the resident giant. The tools of his trade are depicted within a fractal pattern, as painters’ boxes with palettes and brushes are transformed into the myriad natural forms and Mesoamerican images found in his finished works.
This piece references many subjects from the master’s work—Maya and Aztec icons, the jungle with its beasts, and even the Pacific Northwest with its orcas and Tahoma (Mt. Rainier). Three-dimensional objects into patterns, which again transform into three dimensions, all lifted off the flat surface to honor Alfredo Arreguín’s imagination and artistic power to mesmerize.
Doug Johnson as the founding editor of Cave Moon Press, started helping poets with book design, illustration and artwork ten years ago. He has been drawing since he was a teenager and was fortunate enough to encounter Alfredo Arreguin an internationally renowned painter who encouraged him to keep drawing. He has two series you have here on Fine Art of America. His more developed pieces are part of the Sombra de Arreguin series (Shadow of Arreguin) as he continues to study the style of his master, like artisans did in generations past.
