Washington State Supreme Court Justice Steven C. Gonz�lez embodies courage and integrity. The descendant of refugees from the Mexican Revolution (on his father�s side) and a Jewish immigrants who passed through Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century (his mother�s side), Gonz�lez has spent his professional life defending the rights of immigrants, minorities, and others who fall through the cracks of the U.S. legal system. In this piece, the words �courage,� �integrity,� and �justice� appear in in Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese and English. An image of the Hokkaido Shinto temple in Sapporo is also included. In the lower left corner is a campesino (Mexican peasant farmer), and in the lower right corner is the image of a domestic abuse victim. Justice Steven Gonz�lez described his career as going from having full resources to trying to find a paper clip; I gave him a paperclip.
Doug Johnson as the founding editor of Cave Moon Press, started helping poets with book design, illustration and artwork ten years ago. He has been drawing since he was a teenager and was fortunate enough to encounter Alfredo Arreguin an internationally renowned painter who encouraged him to keep drawing. He has two series you have here on Fine Art of America. His more developed pieces are part of the Sombra de Arreguin series (Shadow of Arreguin) as he continues to study the style of his master, like artisans did in generations past.
